O’s Notes: Descarga – a Latin jam on top of a bass riff – the theme surfacing John on his debut as a leader. The Band is a trio with special guest Richie Flores infusing congas and percussion. Ravi Coltrane also adds sax on a couple of tracks. The groove is funky Latin jazz written mostly by pianist Luis Perdomo. Benitez holds the rhythm but also adds accents in all the right places.
