O’s Notes: Saxophonist and composer David Larsen composed these tunes as a pandemic escape. They evolved into his latest release Deviate From Standards and it is a winner. There’s a cool swagger on the opener, “A New Thing Comin’” that continues through the session with Larsen driving melodies on top of two tight rhythm sections, one with Kate Skinner (p) and Josh Skinner (b), the other with Danny McCollim (p) and Nick Isherwood (b). Brendan McMurphy plays drums in both configurations as well as playing trumpet & flugelhorn. Guest Ken Peplowski (cl) shines on “Augmented Reality”. Greg Yasintsky doubles the sax attack with Larsen notably on “Tensai” capping this swinger.
