O’s Notes: This is Steve’s 4th release of reconstituted Yiddish music. It has a mild klezmer feel but is more modern, mild jazz-fusion. Berstein (t) gathers a group of musicians mostly from the San Francisco Bay area including guitarists Will Bernard and Nels Cline. It is a rather creative adventure with specific appeal. “Naphtali” and “Dan” have intricate horn melodies interlaced with the guitars. We liked the more peaceful flow of “Asher” and “Reuben”, the subtle funky bass line of “Issachar”, and “Joseph”. The complexity of Bernstein’s music allows the listener to engage on different aspects of each tune on successive listening allowing alternate perspectives.
