O’s Notes: This 1957 session features pianist Red Garland in his prime with featured guest John Coltrane on sax. The mood is established during the first few bars of the opener “Billie’s Bounce”. Coltrane takes charge on the melody before handing off to Donald Byrd (t). “Crazy Rhythm” is done as a trio with Garland exploding across the keys and Paul Chambers keeping pace on bass including a solo with the bow. There are only four titles but enough to give you a strong dose of the band. George Joyner plays bass on 3 of the 4 and Arthur Taylor keeps time all the way through. They wrap the set with “Lazy Mae”, a blues ballad with a lot of soul. Dig It!
