O’s Notes: Drummer Devin Gray debuts with his quartet featuring Ellery Eskelin (sax), Dave Ballou (t) and Michael Formanek (b). They are out of the box starting with an unconventional DVD sized package for the CD, playing sans piano and with an abundance of improvisation. The music is mostly Avant Garde with some free flowing modern jazz as well. “Talking With Hands” is heavily syncopated and energetic contrasting with the more peaceful “Thickets”. Gray wrote all of the tunes and plays a prominent role. Eclectic? Yes. Boring? No. ‘Worth checking out? No doubt!
