O’s Notes: This is collaboration between Joel (sax) and pianist Brad Mehldau. The music bounces along nicely as these friends (since high school) play off of each other intuitively. Most of the ten songs are newly arranged covers of classic jazz pieces like the title track, “Smile” and “Round Midnight”. The exception is Frahm’s “Away From Home”, which is highlighted by the characteristic warm sounds emanating from Joel’s tenor sax. The session is like a reunion for these two musicians, one in which we clearly hear the bond of their friendship.
