O’s Notes: Stella is now known in Zimbabwe as the grandmother of traditional music. She sings and plays the mbria, an African thumb piano. The mbria was banned during the British colonial period and was an instrument that women were forbidden to play. Yet Chiweshe persisted and became a master of the instrument. This recording features a re-recording of her first album, Trance Hits and a second CD of Classic Hits. She has gained international recognition playing her native music, a communicative natural music using drums as talking instruments as well as percussion. The Classic hits are more popular African music, suitable for dance and celebration.
