O’s Notes: Down the Wire is the latest hot contemporary jazz CD from Spyro Gyra, a band that seems to never get tired. Tom Schuman (keyboards), Jay Beckenstein (sax), Julio Fernandez, (g), Bonny B (d) and Scott Ambush (b) have a sound that is always appealing and fresh but these guys have been jamming for a long time! They play eleven new songs written by each of the members. “Make It Mine” surprised us with some urban vocals from Bonny extending their funky instrumentals in yet another direction. But the rest of the program is appealing to both old and new fans. It is smooth jazz with a punch!
