O’s Notes: Duke is a living legend of contemporary jazz funk. He attracts a wealth of talent to play on Dukey Treats. Singers Rachelle Ferrell, Teena Marie, Howard Hewette and Lori Perry; Sheila E (perc), Johnny Guitar Watson, Patches Stewart (sax), Everette Harp (sax), Lenny Castro (perc) and Ndugu Chancler (d) are just a few of the players involved. The sound is right back in the late 1970’s on “Dukey Treats”. George shows he can still croon on the soulful “Listen Baby” and “Right On Time” including bass work from Wayman Tisdale. We love the funky stuff on “Mercy” with the horn accents and “Images of Us”. Teena, George and Jonathan Butler team up to sing about “Sudan” surfacing some issues. Duke wrote the music, lyrics and directs the party. His groove is forever young.
