O’s Notes: John takes cool jazz a la Mulligan and adds a dose of avant-garde to arrive at neobop/fusion that they are calling East Coast Cool. The quartet is Allan Chase (baritone sax), John Hebert (b), Matt Wilson (d) and leader John McNeil on trumpet. It is all new music aside from the cover of “Bernie’s Tune”. We give him applause for the high level of creativity that emanates without alienating his audience, given that audience is a special ’hip’ crowd.
