O’s Notes: Veteran jazz guitarist Kevin Eubanks brings us his latest take on jazz blending sounds of the New York and Los Angeles for East West Time Line. Rene Camacho (b), Bill Pierce (sax), Mino Clinelu (perc) and Marvin Smith (d) are the LA crew. Orrin Evans (p), Nicholas Payton (t), Dave Holland (b) and Jeff Watts (d) are the NYC team with Eubanks as the common denominator in both ensembles. They balance burners like “Time Line” and “Captain Señor Mouse” with soft, warm ballads like “Water Colors”, “What’s Goin’ On” and “Poet”. They get a little funky on “Carnival” courtesy of Camacho and again on “Take The Coltrane”. There’s a touch of Latin on “Cubans Chant” before Eubanks and Pierce romance us on “My One And Only Love” capping an entertaining session.
