O’s Notes: El Muki is a mythical figure that rewarded miners who honored it with offerings and punished greedy abusers. The Afro-Peruvian Quartet seeks to honor traditional music made by real people playing real instruments. Peruvian trumpeter and composer Gabriel Algeria leads the band with Laura Andrea Leguía (t-sax), Hugo Alcázar (d), Jocho Velásquez (g), Mario Cuba (b), Freddy “Huevito” Lobatón (perc), and JF Maza (sax). We liked “Mala Señal”, “Vista Panoramica”, “Luciérnagas”, Alegrias’s luscious trumpet on “Panabe”, and “Auscencia”.
