O’s Notes: Trombonist Steve Davis assembles a team of well-seasoned musicians to play a wide selection of classic jazz tunes. They are focused and deliver a strong performance without a lot of glitter. 90-year old pianist Hank Jones, Joe Farnsworth (d) and Nat Reeves (b) make up his rhythm section. We liked the bubbly feel of “Minor Contention” with guests Roy Hargrove (t) and Steve Nelson (vibes) and the flow of “Have You Met Miss Jones” with a spirited solo from Farnsworth. Surrounding it all it the warm resounding tone from Davis’ trombone.
