O’s Notes: A seasoned Arthur Blythe plays in a quartet with John Hicks (p, organ), Cecil Brooks (d) and Bob Stewart who handles the lower registers with his tuba. The music selection is far more mellow than the Avant Garde you may expect from Blythe but still as creative as ever, notably on “Exhaust Suite” written by Brooks and Stewart. He even includes several covers of standards like “Night Train” and “All Blues”. Arthur has lost nothing on alto sax. He plays with an expressive spirit that is a true statement.
