O’s Notes: This CD includes two trio sessions from 1951 and a quartet recorded in 1977. The earlier sessions find Cal playing drums and bongos along with the vibes. This was before he established himself as one of the premier Latin jazzmen. While his talent is evident here, the’’77 session is a clear step above featuring a more composed, polished vibraphonist. This is a nice contrast and historical perspective, not to mention good music.
