O’s Notes: Familia pairs two established Cuban pianists, Arturo O’Farrill and Chucho Valdes in a“Tribute to Bebo and Chico. Chico O’Farrill and Bebo Valdes are their late fathers, both pioneers of Latin jazz. The first disc features Arturo and Chucho and The Afro Lain Jazz Orchestra performing six family originals notably “Three Revolutions“ and “Team de Bebo”. Disc two introduces us to the third generation powering their own ensemble along with a few of their own originals. Jessie Valdes (d), Leyanis Valdes (p), Adam O’Farrill (t) and Zack O’Farrill (d) make their presence known. The soothing groove of “Recuerdo”, the jovial spirit of “Con Poco Coco” and the up-tempo piano duet “Para Chico” make this a thrilling session and prove that the blood line is still rich with vibrant jazz.
