O’s Notes: Composer Constantine Alexander plays trumpet and leads Firetet, a quintet born during a jam session at Gino’s East Pizzeria, Chicago in 2017. Roy McGrath (t-sax), Julius Tucker (p), Ben Dillinger (b), and Greg Essie (d) all play a role over these seven originals. These cats are cooking right out of the gate on “The Show”, and they end similarly with “Deez”, Alexander’s contrafact of Coltrane’s “Giant Steps”. In between they slow it down on “Fire” and include warm ballads like “Forever and Always”. They sound good at all speeds exhibiting both intensity and passion.
