O’s Notes: First Things First is a vibrant session led by Russian bassist Boris Kozlov, a man with three Grammy’s under his belt! He teams up with a fine band including Art Hirahara (p) Donny McCaslin (t-sax, a-fl), Brian Gillece (vibes) and Rudy Royston (d). They open with syncopated rhythms on “Page One” that continue though the rest of the session. The pace is varied and we found enjoyment at all tempos highlighted by “The More Things Change”, “Second Line Sally”.
