O’s Notes: Donald is a well-established neobop sax player. He has brought a lot of freshness to the jazz scene and Free Style continues along those lines with a lot of funky contemporary flair. Whether it is the title track or the cool funky beats behind “New Hope” and “Free To Be” (with the James Brown bass line) Donald manages to again create new space with songs that have appeal to both straight ahead and contemporary jazz listeners. He also modernizes classic numbers like “So What” and “Well You Needn’t”. The band is a quartet with Glen Patscha (p), Vincente Archer (b) and John Lamkin (d). The living legends Ron Carter (b) and Billy Cobham (d) join Harrison for two bonus tracks as well.
