O’s Notes: Shawn Maxwell is a master of reeds, a composer and leader of a band including Chika Inoue (a-sax), Mark Nelson (p, Wurlitzer), Michael Barton (b), and Greg Essig (d). All 7 compositions are Maxwell originals. Shawn’s inclusion of Inoue, a purely classical artist helps him achieve the desired mix of jazz and classical music. Chika does a fine job taking the lead on “Reed Tire Earth”. Nils Higdon adds percussion on “Cats Are Gods”, another highlight along with “8 Bit Sounds With A Plumber”. The sound stage was deep with excellent tonal qualities, attributable to the vinyl format.
