O’s Notes: Miles defined the essence of cool back in 1961. These live sessions were recorded at the Blackhawk in San Francisco on two successive days. The lineup is Hank Mobley (sax), Wynton Kelly (p), Paul Chambers (b), Jimmy Cobb (d) and Davis on trumpet. They set the pace from the opener “Oleo” with Miles, Kelly and Mobley trading leads. This time period features Miles burning hard, just before he started experimenting with rock/fusion. His muted sound is crisp and dynamic. These are modern treasures and a strong addition to any Davis fan’s collection.
