O’s Notes: Composer, arranger Darrell Katz puts together an intriguing set of free, jazz-fusion that features poems recited by Rebecca Shrimpton with some creative takes on classics and blues. The poems were written by the late Paula Tatarunis, Darrell’s wife. She used poetic free form that at times is nonsensical but always imparts a message, a lyrical freeform that is a rather unique most notably on “Otta Horn”! We also enjoyed “Galeanthropology” written by Katz for Paula. Truly this is something different. More traditional selections are “I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger”, “Sweet Baby James” and Shrimpton’s solo rendition of Duke Ellington’s “Sound of Love”.
