O’s Notes: Twenty-seven year old Michael Dease started playing sax at 11. He switched to trombone at 18, attended Juilliard and has performed with many top jazz talents. He has depth, technique and rich warm tone. He is unquestionably one of the rising jazz trombone stars. His core quartet includes Cyrus Chestnut (p), Rufus Reid (b) and Gene Jones (d). Grace includes ballads like “In A Mist” with guest Roy Hargrove (t), straight ahead “Blues On The Corner” featuring Eric Alexander (sax) and well developed tunes like “I Talk to The Trees” with Claudio Roditi (flugelhorn) and Sharel Cassity (fl). While Dease includes a wealth of talented guests, he stands out as the leader and shines, especially on the ballads. We also enjoyed his covers of two Ivan Lins compositions, “Septembro” and “Love Dance” extending his reach to the contemporary set!
