O’s Notes: Matt Lavelle (cornet, flugelhorn, cl) and John Pietro (vibes, congas, perc) form a duo in celebration of the music of Thelonious Monk. Monk’s music was often misunderstood but increasingly serves as the basis for modern interpretations. Some of these are delightful and others are experiments gone badly. In this case, Lavelle and Pietro peel back the layers to surface blues at the root of Monk’s work. From there they improvise freely in a simple presentation that sheds yet another light on classic Monk.
