O’s Notes: Beyoncé, Sonny Rollins, Steve Wilson and Stevie Wonder are the“Hero(es) in saxophonist Addison Evans world and though she’s been playing sax for many years, this is her debut as a leader. She composed all of the music except on four selections, one for/by each of her heroes. Melanie Charles delivers heartfelt vocals on “Blue”, “Mama” and especially on “Do What’s Best For You”. Mathis Picard (p) and Matthew Jodrell (t, flugelhorn) elevate their contributions on “Open Your Eyes” with Dan Chmielinski (b) and Roberto Giaquinto (d) anchoring the rhythms throughout the set. We are impressed with Adison whether she’s playing baritone or alto sax; she breathes an abundance of warmth into the melodies. Stay tuned!
