O’s Notes: Tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds is perhaps the greatest ambassador for Canadian jazz musicians, surfacing what seems like an endless stream of good talent on his Cellar Music label. He takes the leads on Home Cookin’ with a strong team that includes Brad Turner (t), Chris Gestrin (p), and eight other musicians. Cory’s sax was stolen just before they began a 3-day stint and recording session at Frankie’s in Vancouver. Weeds garnered a replacement sax, and the show went on! They open with a bluesy groove on “Corner Kisses” before they start swinging on “Metamorphosis”, and the title track. We also enjoyed the drum work on “Corner Kisses”, and the warm “Lullaby of the Leaves”.
