O’s Notes: If I had to use one word to describe Wayne’s work on sax it would be ‘cool’. He is laid back and composed while imparting a slow burn with throaty tones on his sax. They open with the title track that includes Joe Locke playing marimba. They make a strong statement of what’s to come. Hans Glawischnig (b), Lewis Nash (d), Jonathan Blake (d) and Locke (vibes) form the core of a strong band. Special guest Tom Harrell (t) leads a round of solos on “Chronic Blues” that makes it one of the best of the lot. The balance of the program includes a few originals and standards. Locke shines as well, especially on “The Sake of It”. These cats swing all the way through the session.
