O’s Notes: If you like country blues, you have to consider this one. Ry Coder writes, plays a bunch of instruments (mainly guitar) and sings tunes about almost anything. “Can I Smoke in Here?”, “Pick-O Boogie”, “Spayed Kooley” (his dog) and “Little Trona Girl” (sung by Juliette Commagere) are a few highlights. The first half is gutsy and the second half has more mellow music and lyrics. This CD comes wrapped in a 90+ page bound book! The story is a lengthier version of his tunes. It’s centered on his life: cars, women, drinkin’… Cooder is a heck of a storyteller and this is one heck of a package!
