O’s Notes: Archie Shepp is a veteran jazz saxophonist and historian. I Hear The Sound is a retake on Attica Blues, Shepp’s 1972 tribute to the uprising at Attica State Penitentiary in 1971. This riot or rebellion (depending on your perspective) culminated in the bloody deaths of 39 people after a 4-day standoff and failed negotiations. The music is emotional and still relevant in some respects today. Though we’ve made much progress, we’ve also languished. This music serves as a reminder and a rekindling of hope for greater strides going forward.
