O’s Notes: This 1981 concert at Philadelphia’s Schubert Theater captured Grover in his prime. Equally adept at straight-ahead and cool jazz this date features more contemporary R&B jazz. The band is a cast of all-stars including Eric Gale (g), Steve Gadd (d), Richard Tee (p), Ralph McDonald (percussion) and Anthony Jackson (b). These guys showed up on many hit contemporary jazz, R&B and adult contemporary albums between 1975 and 1985. Grover broke a seat on “Winelight”, the opener and kept the intensity going through “Mister Magic” which included a nice percussion & drum solo. There are six of his best in all including “Just the Two of Us” with Zack Sanders singing.
