O’s Notes: There is an exotic feel on In Jerusalem, a transformation of Hasidic melodies into jazz. It is a contrasting follow-up to Latin Jazz Underground, Weinstein’s collaboration with Cuban jazz pianist Aruán Ortiz. Flutist Mark Weinstein again turns to local musicians to capture the spirit of his message. Israelis Steve Peskoff (g), Gilad Abro (b), Haim Perkoff (d) and Gilad Dobrecky (perc) round out his quintet to deliver a rich performance that retains elements of the original songs as they are morphed into modern jazz.
