O’s Notes: John has been a mainstay trumpeter on the New York jazz scene for decades supporting many mainstream jazz acts. “In Real Time“marks his debut (at 51) as a leader and composer. He assembles a fine quintet with Stacey Dillard (sax), John Hart (g), Cameron Brown (b) and Victor Lewis (d). We urge you to take the time to listen to this one because there’s some magic here! We liked the funky “My Man Louis!” and “Lovely Planet” a warm ballad. We also enjoyed the two Brazilian covers, “Ensaio Geral” and “Moro Velho” that features John’s wife Janet Axelrod (fl) and cellist Leo Grinhausz. Bailey composed 7 of 9 songs and does well in the spotlight leaving us awaiting his next effort.
