O’s Notes: Dutch bassist Joris Teepe was a fixture in drummer Rasheed Ali’s Quintet until Ali’s untimely death in 2009.‘In The Spirit Of Rasheed Ali‘has been evolving in Teepe’s mind for quite some time and comes to life on this release. It is accompanied by 66 pages of liner notes and photos in hardcover detailing the Teepe/Ali engagement as musicians, a special touch to the ceremonial album. Saxophonist Wayne Escoffery steps into the spotlight and shines on “Alphabet” as does guitarist Freddie Bryant on “Turnaround” along with Teepe on both songs. We also enjoyed “Bolivar Blues” and “Think Of One”. The program includes bebop, hard bop blues and modern jazz for a fine set.
