O’s Notes: They open burning on “Freddie’s Groove” before settling down on a balanced set. There is a wealth of brass: four reed players and Phil on trombone. It doesn’t go to waste as they combine to make rich harmony on “One For Johnson” and “Horace’s Scope”. They venture into the free space with “This One’s For Trane” and swing a bit on “Beyond A Memory” with vocals by Ranelin. They wrap up the session with the cool syncopated trilogy “Shades of Dolphy”. It is as the title suggests, inspiring!
