O’s Notes: Isn’t Life Grand is the seventh album for trumpeter Mike Herriott who assembles a large ensemble of Toronto’s finest but mostly himself! Herriott plays trumpets, trombone, horns, basses and piano over eight selections. All are original pieces except the title track written and arranged by Kenny Wheeler on Herriott’s Free At Last released in 1995. The song is dedicated to the late Wheeler (t), Ross Taggart (sax) and Keith Copeland (d) each of whom performed the piece on Free At Last. As always, Herriott’s music touches several genres culminating with “Gravity” a funky contemporary selection capping a resounding set.
