O’s Notes: Mel plays the Hammond B3 and partners with a wealth of strong musicians including Freddie Hendrix (flugelhorn), Bruce Williams (sax) and Butch Johnson (congas) with Ronny Jordan and Mark Bowers splitting duty on guitar. Their music could be characterized as cool jazz or contemporary R&B jazz. It’s a mix of Mel’s originals and some covers notably “13th Portrait ” (Jimmy Smith/Wes Montgomery) and “It Was A Very Good Year featuring Davis singing. The groove is solid from end to end especially on “Pieces” and “Heavyweight” (McGriff).
