O’s Notes: Canadian drummer, composer, arranger and jazz educator Dave Robbins does a lot of big band work but assembles a sextet for“Joan Of Art. Brad Turner (t), Mike Allen (t-sax), Rod Murray (tb), Chris Gestrin (p), and Steve Holy (b) join Dave for 66 minutes of fresh bebop. Robbins wrote nine of the eleven tunes. There’s a lazy swing with pacifying brass on ‘Spies‘ and balance across the band on ‘Ode To Drums‘ with Robbins asserting himself. We also enjoyed the Latin vibe on ‘Take Cinco‘, the upbeat bounce of the title track and ‘Upper Management‘.
