O’s Notes: From the opening notes of the title track, we knew we were in for a treat on this rich, brass-laden session led by Etienne Charles (t). The funky backbeat comes courtesy of drummer Obed Calvaire, a man to watch. Special guests Ralph McDonald (perc) and Monty Alexander (p) make an impact notably on “Kitch’s Bebop of Calypso”. Charles solicits the help of an orchestra conducted by Richard DeRosa for “Teresa” and “Rose”. The rich strings have a buffeting contrast to the upbeat tracks rounding out the session and giving it another dimension. We also enjoyed “Sugar Bum Bum” capping a fine set.
