O’s Notes: Kakande is a unique approach to Mande music combining traditional and Western instruments. The program is light and bouncy with a spirit of motion. Dioubate sings out front of the band: Mamady Kouyate (g), Raul Rothblatt (cello), Sylvain Leroux (fl) and Avram Fefer (sax). Famoro also plays the balafon, a traditional instrument that sounds at times like a music box. It is the prevalent sound throughout the CD. This was one of the top African releases of 2008 and a one that serves as a good introduction to contemporary West African music.
