O’s Notes: This is the grits and gravy funk that also has a strong jazz quotient. The music is extracted from recordings by Joey DeFrancesco (B3), “Fathead” Newman (sax), Houston Person (sax), Rodney Jones (g), Melvin Sparks (g) and others. The counter beats are excellent on “Live Bait” reminiscent of the best of James Brown’s funky music. The cool sounds of Randy Johnson’s (g) “The Hat Man” with Joe Locke (vibes) and Bill Heid’s “Peach Cobbler” are other favorites.
