O’s Notes: Kindred Spirits“is another free jazz collaboration with saxophonist Ivo Perelman. This time he pairs with German clarinetist Rudi Mahall. Though they had little time playing together prior to the recording, these guys perform as if they were joined at the hip. There is excellent interplay here with free-spirited, spontaneous improvisation (without written music). They flutter through the trees like birds playing together and even larger animals with the deeper sounds. It is a 100-minute 2-disc set with lots of variety. Our favorite is the 5th track on disc two for it’s intense interaction.
