O’s Notes: Trombonist Nick Finzer partners with pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Rufus Reid and Lewis Nash on drums for Legacy, a tribute to JJ Johnson. Not many trombonists can even approximate the tone, improvisation and clarity of JJ but Finzer is up to the task surrounded by guys who played with the legend! Rufus takes a casual stroll on “Fatback”, Nick and Renee are bouncing along on “CC”, and “Lament” is a rich ballad. These are three examples that remind us of Johnson on the centennial celebration of his birth year.
