O’s Notes: As soon as we popped in the CD, the club-cool “Sara’s Dance” poured through our speakers with Ron leading on sax and some funky glue coming from a B3. We checked the liner notes to find Joey DeFrancesco (B3), Christian McBride (b) and Rashawn Ross (t) among the accompanying musicians. This crew lived up to our expectations. They show the ability to cook on “Mighty Burner”. They also groove on Grover Washington Jr.’s “Mister Magic” and “Making Love To You”. The theme of the session is remembering some of the contemporary jazz legends like Stanley Turrentine, Grover, Shirley Scott and J.J. Johnson. This is worthy recognition and great listening!
