O’s Notes: The Rippingtons have a nice formula for contemporary hits. It includes the heart and soul: Russ Freeman (g, keyboards) and Eric Marienthal (sax) with funk courtesy of real drums by Dave Karasony, Kim Stone on bass and Scott Breadman (percussion). We prefer the funky beats on “Mr. 3”, “High Life”, “Stingray” and “17 Mile Drive” along with the gospel feel of “Avalon” and mild reggae of “Get Over It” to the couple of smooth tracks.
