O’s Notes: One of the premier contemporary jazz ensembles is Fourplay, a band with over 20 years and a dozen albums behind them! They welcome guitarist Chuck Loeb to the fold in his debut along with original members Bob James (p), Nathan East (b, vocals) and Harvey Mason (d, perc). The guitar seat has changed a few times and the band has updated their groove on each occasion. This is no exception as they get into a serious groove on Loeb’s “3rd Degree”. As always there is nice selection of music at varied tempos. East sings “I’ll Be Still Lovin’ You” before the guest vocalists light up the stage: Ruben Studdard sings a fresh arrangement of “Love TKO” and Anita Baker warms our soul with “You’re My Thrill”. Our favorite is “A Night In Rio”, a mellow cut with everyone contributing to the groove. Fourplay has lost nothing with time and Loeb fits right in as they once again deliver a strong set!
