O’s Notes: The Hard Bop Messengers are led by composer, producer, trombonist John Covelli with Ben Shafer (sax, fl), Luke Sailor (p) Chris Meschede (b) and Nick Savage (d) and Matt Krieg (vocals). They play Jazz Interpretations of the Grateful Dead, a cult group that delighted fans with live performances all over the world. Dead Heads will be familiar with the lyrics and perhaps intrigued by the jazz bent on stories loaded peculiarities. The sound is classic New Orleans, ragtime, bluesy jazz featuring raspy, vocals from Krieg. “Me and My Uncle”, “Brown Eyed Women”, and “Althea” are among the best.
