O’s Notes: Saxophonist, composer Dave Anderson leads a quartet with Grant Richards (p), Lorin Cohen (b), and Jimmy Macbride (d) for In Lieu of Flowers, a collection that is a musical substitute for a bouquet of roses. However, we suggest it is the perfect accompaniment! Dave’s intent with the title is to pay homage to jazz luminaries Wayne Shorter and Maria Schneider, and he meets that objective. They swing on “Thilmany” but most of the tunes are pleasing slow to mid-tempo ballads like “Lost City”, Sandy Ladies”, and “Arms of Maria”.
