O’s Notes: This is a classic performance from the 1972 Monterey Jazz Festival. The spotlight is on blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon. He’s got soulfully smooth lyrics that make songs like “S.K. Blues” come alive. The featured guest artist is Robben Ford, a hard drivin’ guitarist that lights it up, especially on “Goin’ Down Slow”. He’s a perfect shadow for Jimmy along with pianist Paul Hines who provides the glue. And if you want Witherspoon at his best, this is a top-notch performance!
