O’s Notes: Bernard Edwards (b) and Nile Rogers (g) are Chic, one of the greatest dance bands ever. This is a live performance in Tokyo during 1996. The band included Philippe Saisse on keyboards, Bill Holloman (sax) and Omar Hakim on drums. New York’s ‘Shades of Black’ danced on the upper stage. This is a real trip back to the 1970s including a guest appearance from Sister Sledge singing “He’s The Greatest Dancer” and their classic, “We Are Family”. Along with the funky dance beats, Chic featured harmonized vocals and sharp brass accents. You will see and hear this as they take a trip back to their early days with their first hit “Dance Dance Dance” and “I Want Your Love”. They also played “Good Times” one of the most sampled songs for hip-hop and “Le Freak” featuring a guitar solo from Slash! While they showed some effect of time, they remained energetic and on point with the punctuated beats that kept us dancing all night! This tour was Edwards’ last as he died in Tokyo from pneumonia days after the performance. Their music persists.
