O’s Notes: This is trumpeter, composer Jason Palmer’s debut recording as a leader, Live From Summit Rock In Seneca Village, Central Park, NYC. Aside from the introduction to Palmer’s music, we learned the history of Seneca Village, originally inhabited by the Munsee Lenape and Wappinger tribes of indigenous people, then settled in 1825 by free Black Americans before being annexed in 1857 to form Central Park. It served as one of the few places to record during the pandemic! Jason forms a quartet with Mark Turner (t-Sax), Edward Perez (b) and Jonathan Blake (d). All five compositions are original and in excess of ten minutes, allowing for well developed solos and evolving themes. We liked the warmth of “Kalispel Bay” and “Self Portrait” best of the 5 selections.
